Antiquated Techniques Won’t Increase Search Engine Traffic

Search Engine SpiderI occasionally come across an advertisement of some sort for top rankings and submission to 1,000s of search engines in my email in box. It’s actually kind of funny that spam marketers would send unsolicited email (in violation of the Can Spam Act) to a company that has specialized in non-spam SEO practices since 1999.

If you get one of these types of emails, don’t waste your time with any company offering to submit your site to 1,000s of search engines or guarantee top rankings. These tactics don’t work like they once did, and unless the company making the claim own the search engine – they can’t guarantee top placement. The only thing that can be guaranteed is that your wallet will be deflated and you will receive more spam than you ever thought possible.

The last time Saeler Enterprises used an automated submission programs was around 2003 and it took almost 8 months for the site to be indexed. While both AddWeb and Web Position are still available, their products are more or less obsolete – even though Web Position Gold has been renamed and no longer features an automated submission function. Basically any benefits these software application provide can be done with other online tools; most of which are free.

Here is a strategy that will get you listed faster and with better results:

  1. Build your website on the WordPress platform with a theme framework such as Genesis. This provides an easily managed website that pings (sends an XML-RPC signal) blog search engines with the new entry or updated entry, provides an RSS feed, allows readers to comment, and much more.
  2. Sign up for Google’s Webmaster tools and integrate Google Analytics, Google +1 and Google Sitemaps (accessed in Google’s Webmaster Tools).
  3. Add new, relevant content everyday; Yes it’s tough to make time for adding new content, but it has to be done. The more well written, relevant content you place on your site the more likely people are to visit your site and then link to your article from their site; increasing your link popularity with the search engines.
  4. Integrate your website with your social networking sites like FaceBook and Twitter, so that each time you add new content to your website the social networks let your followers know.
  5. Subscribe to a popular blog that deals with the same topics your website does and comment periodically. Do Not spam comment, actually add value to the blog(s) you choose to follow. Most websites that allowing commenting, like this one, queue the comment for approval; you will see the comment but no one else will until we approve it. We always delete comments like “Great article I find it really helpful” that are attached to a picture or other non-article posts.
  6. Make certain your robots.txt doesn’t restrict any of the search engines you want from finding the content you want.

How does this work and why is it better than manually submitting your site to the search engines?

  • A site with lots of links back to it will be hit by a particular search engine more often than a site that has almost no link popularity. As a search engine spider surfs the web it will find links back to your site and return before it would have based upon its own database of sites. When the search engine comes back to the site it may not hit the entire site at that time, but it will update some of your content.
  • Many search engines only go a few links deep, so having a link to a page linking back to all of your content pages ensures that the search engine will find all of your content.
  • Some search engines place a higher value on sites / pages they found on their own. So if the search engine follows a link from another site to yours it will think it found the link on it’s own.

Properly implemented this organic / forced spidering technique can get a brand new site listed in Google in 2-4 weeks, without having to do anything more than add a few pages of content.

Bear in mind that getting top rankings is another matter.
